Themill “Le Rocche” was established after the war in 1958, located in Rocca San Giovanni in the neighbourhood of San Giacomo-novella II, by owner Domenico Martelli’s grandfather. The year 1995 represents an important step in the history of the company “Martelli Agricola”. It is in fact then that the production and marketing of the oil produced in the new and current production site located in Lanciano, in Contrada Villa Martelli “land of origin of the family lineage”, with the experience and guidance of his father Federico, adds a new charge of enthusiasm and resourcefulness. Getting consumers to know and savour their extra virgin olive oil products far from the place of production becomes the main objective, but it immediately becomes clear that sales alone would not allow this result or guarantee the desired future for the mill.

“ We were not known outside our territory, our size and our structure did not allow us to compete with the prices of the big traders and bottlers. In addition our small production did not allow us to produce with continuity the amount needed to compete in the commercial field. It was then that we chose to focus on quality, it was the only choice that for us was stimulating and viable. Absolute quality, sought without any kind of compromise.”

At the Martelli Agricola company, the sense of belonging is the pride of sharing together the project of growth and enhancement of the Abruzzi olive-growing territory. You see it everywhere, you read it in the eyes, you hear it in the words of those who work here, with true and unchanged passion.
Martelli Agricola, in essence, is a family business, which has expanded within the neighbourhood of the origin of the family lineage, converting the original buildings into a new structures keeping in line with the times which is dictated by the developing market, while maintaining its origins and respect for the territory and the environment that surrounds it.
Villa Martelli
History
Villa Martelli is about three kilometres from the city center of Lanciano. The first municipal road projected was drafted by Eng. Filippo Sangiacomo in 1878. The roadway was narrow and cobbled, it was a small and uncomfortable road, but it represented the first connection with the town center. The road was then upgraded and became a main route in 1920.
In the fifties the neighbourhood was equipped with a waterline, a fountain and a public wash house.
At the beginning of the sixties other projects were completed:
- The asphalting of the main road
- The construction of the first sewage line
- The upgrade and improvement to the small square in front of the Church of San Donato
The installation of oil lighting instead is certainly prior to 1914; in fact, municipal documents dated 27 April 1914 were found in which the municipal council took from its budget £100 to pay for the oil lighting of the neighbourhood. Electric lighting was only installed in 1926, the works were carried out by SIM (Società Idroelettrica Majella).
Villa Martelli took its name from the Martelli family, which was one of the richest in the territory between Rocca San Giovanni, Villa Scorciosa, Villa Stanazzo, Iconicella, the valley of the Holy Spirit and Treglio.
The Lancianese historian O. Bocache notes in his chronicles that the Martelli possessed many hectares of fertile land and cultivated properly and had built many houses for their extended family. One of these houses was used as a rural school.
The construction of the church dedicated to San Donato, Bishop and Martyr dates back to 1742. The population was increasing and in 1792 the families residing in the territory were 63 and there were 430 inhabitants. In the fifth general census of the population of the Kingdom of Italy (1911), Villa Martelli had 311 families, of which 87 lived in agglomerated houses and 224 in scattered houses, out of a total of 1366 inhabitants. In the sixth general census (1921) Villa Martelli was declared a “village” on the list of inhabited places with their own name.
The inhabitants of Villa Martelli devoted themselves not only to activities of primary industry but also to the craft industries. In fact there were mills, olive mills, shoemakers, masons, carpenters and traders.
During the Second World War the village became the main camp for the Germans and later for the allies and the population was forced to take refuge in the caves dug into the slopes surrounding the village. After the war, the village was largely depopulated because, due to great poverty, people were forced to emigrate to the Americas. In the sixties the emigration continued towards European countries and the regions of northern Italy and only in the last decades, with the economic recovery and the artisanal and commercial development of the area, has it considerably repopulated.

Quality is an undisputed tradition of the Martelli family. The oil mill was born from the passion for olive growing. Among the first oil mills in the area, the oil mill continues today, as then, a careful and scrupulous olive oil production, with commitment to protect the authenticity of a product that wants to represent an original combination of atmosphere, colour, magic and the traditions of the territory. Il The oil mill is at the center of a unique territory, Costa dei Trabocchi whose peculiar microclimate has always been a precious ally of the Frentana olive growing.
